Mother Nature is officially confused this Friday playing tug of war, September 4, 2026, as a massive atmospheric trough across the Pacific Northwest keeps Northern California and Nevada feeling suspiciously like fall while Hurricane Marie lurks south of Baja to casually pushing tropical moisture our way for the weekend.
Up in Northern California, expect the coolest and moodiest weather of the bunch, featuring coastal 60s, inland 70s and lower 80s, and lingering showers around the Sierra, southern Cascades, and Interstate 80, topped off with gusty winds just to mess up your hair.
Northern and western Nevada are following suit with cool, breezy, and occasionally showery conditions, while Las Vegas and southern Nevada stay blissfully dry and actually bearable at 5 to 10 degrees below normal, though afternoon wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph might snatch your hat. Utah remains mostly dry but incredibly windy with 30 to 45 mph gusts as the serious tropical moisture politely stays south for now.
Arizona is currently experiencing a severe split personality, leaving western areas dry and breezy while the central and eastern regions turn increasingly humid, triggering isolated storms mostly east and southeast of Phoenix area and scattered thunderstorms around Tucson and the White Mountains that could bring heavy rain and flash flooding given the deeper levels of moisture aloft.
Meanwhile, Southern California, the Inland Empire, and the deserts are mostly dry under an onshore flow, bringing mid to upper 80s to the Inland Empire, 85 to 95 degrees to the High Desert, and a delightfully toasty 100 to 104 in the lower deserts, all while mountain passes endure 40 to 45 mph wind gusts. Ultimately, today is just one big messy transition day, delivering a bizarre mix of northern chills, southwestern desert winds, and brewing Arizona thunderstorms before the real tropical feel spreads north this weekend.
Rainfall totals have slightly increased given more increased agreement on the remnant moisture with most of the rainfall totals looking to be in northern portions of southern CA.
